No city has physically transformed itself in recent years quite like Beijing, site of the 2008 Olympics. In fact, as contributing editor Kurt Andersen explains, the last metropolis to undergo such an architectural facelift was New York City, in a building boom that resulted in the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building. As these images attest, the new Beijing is a city where, when it comes to design, nothing is forbidden.
