Margiela's ten years in menswear

It's getting harder to remember that Martin Margiela was ever considered one of those designers who trawls the dark, intellectual side of the street. Sure, there's still a waft of high concept around ideas like his Replica range, but who knew the guy was such a stone-gone disco nut? The collection that celebrates Margiela's ten years in menswear was the apotheosis of his love of mirror balls: scarves, jacket lapels, even leggings (in themselves, a disco notion) were wrapped in reflective surfaces. There was also a celebratory scatter of confetti over shirts and shoes. They underlined the collection's emphasis on light and air. A suede blouson was laser-cut in tiny slashes to open it up. So was a navy blazer. And trousers had a side seam of laser-cut fabrics twisted together to create a chevron effect.

Margiela has always been a master of arbitrary notions made appealing. It mightn't seem like much of an idea to make a waistcoat and jacket with buttons folded under to provide a smooth, detail-less front, but it actually looked pretty good. And even the Replica concept (which one occasionally feels like filing under "Why Bother?") produced a smart, unstructured jacket from Buenos Aires in the seventies. One of the intriguing subtexts of Margiela World continues to be his tough-as-nails accessories. Here, it was literally nails—hammered into the heels of boots and shoes, bent into belt buckles and pendants.

AMAZING GRACE

Today marks a profound and bittersweet milestone for all of us, as we bear witness to both an end and a beginning. And while we must continue on, we must also be grateful to have been blessed with someone who has so ably guided us to where we are today. When there has been so much love and happiness for someone, it is natural to be reluctant to close such a wonderful chapter in our lives, for moving forward is rarely accomplished without considerable grief and sadness. And while our sorrow may be profound, the clouds will clear, and the sun will shine on us again. And in that warm, bright light we will find ourselves facing a glorious future. A future of exciting challenges and infinite possibilities, in which the horizon will stretch out before us, trimmed in the heavenly glow of the sunrise of our tomorrow.

LOVE FEAST

The value of things is not on its duration, but on the intensity of the happenings. That’s why there are unforgettable moments, unexplainable things and incomparable persons.
Fernando Pessoa

I’ve always thought that only later on in the future I’d be able to understand the meaning of certain gestures.

I’ve always thought that only later on I’d learn how to truly appreciate the gift of life and to make clear its purpose.

Only later on I would be ready to take certain decisions with a deeper conscience.

Only later on, after knowing who I’m, I could build something with someone.

I was never able to follow the mainstream and the natural steps of the ones who get confused between conformism of feelings and being true to their hearts; of the ones who get confused between passed time and deep quality relations, of the ones who get confused among the choices of the system and their own will.

I’ve never believed in competition. In arguments. In power. In hierarchy.

I’ve always believed in working with transparency, in places where I’d know the principles, the means and the objectives.

I always believed in the significance of simple and positive gestures. In the openness of the spirit and in creativity as conditions for inspiration and tools that allow us to built always something from scratch.

I’ve always believed in the significance of values and validation of processes above all.

I’ve always believed in cooperation. I’ve always search for it

But later on has arrived now and if I was able to find some peace inside me, I still search for it in the others, in the community. I still don’t understand very well what peace means to the others, and how is it possible that after such technological and scientific knowledge, there’s still a lack of significance on the daily human gestures, on the importance of life and an easiness of judgment towards the other, the rhythm that doesn’t allow the flow of communication and the understanding of complex situations, the noise that hides the thoughts, the attitudes and the gestures and distances Mankind from Nature, from the others and above all from the self.

To deepen this relation with the “Self”, doesn’t mean to become individualist, neither to give voice to the Ego or to live for the consumption of Goods and Emotions. Or to continue judging and classifying the world forgetting the significance of simplicity.

It means to know how to listen to our inner voice so we can have the courage to follow our wished paths or people we admire, and to do the best we can at each moment and whenever we can’t to grow and pursuit, because error, imperfect and difference are part of the way.

As the paths become harder, the better we enjoy the small victories. The better we enjoy small and big gestures of concern, support, kindness and honesty. The more we make use of values like courage, resolution, responsibility, respect, honesty, humbleness, smile, sensitivity and peace.

I’m nobody, a small ant in the infinite universe going through one of the hardest moments of my life, and I still believe there’s always a path for each one of us, a role where everybody is a guru. We are all important to each other and not only for the ones who we are close to physically or emotionally, because life is HAPPY, if we learn how to built it with the stones we get on the way, to built with what the context is offering, but above all by listening to our heart, knowing our true nature, having in love our trust and inspiration, finding the shelter in ourselves.

And now feeling good with myself has allowed the arrival of later.

Because one day, I knew that I had to go on my own so I could better know myself, to understand my fundamental values and how to put them in practice and live in accordance.

I put on the red carpet so everybody can walk in. Life is abundance even when it doesn’t seem like it....

The better days are yet to come! Because the first step is always mine! And the others are always the reflection of me!
